Q1B Narrative

Apply the concept of Narrative to one piece of coursework.

How is the space organised?
Is it linear/ Non linear?
Does it have enigma?
Theories? Toderos, Propp, Levi Straus, Barthes, Three Act.
Editing

Intro- Briefly what coursework was (Film Opening called Cohen).

Levi Strauss- Binary Opposites
Binary Opposites of...

P: Old and young.
E: man standing on pitch at beginning, kids getting ready for a match.
E: highlights nostagia.
themes of aging annd passing
idea routine from real life media film Saving Private Ryan which also used a flash back.

Future and past

Todorov- Equilibrium, disruption, new equilibrium
We challenged this theory. It wasn't typical of the genre to bring a problem in straight away.
Cohen didnt have disruption in the opening but the films overall follwed this theory with disruptions such as the protagonists wife leaving and him getting cancer.

Propp- Typical characters- hero, villain, damsel, sidekick, dispatcher

Barthes- Enigma, codes, Action, Symbolic,
Lots of enigma, who is the man, whats going to happen.

Barthes- Codes
Symbol of football,

Outro-Choosing a film opening meant that theories were at the heart of our idea. We thought the most influential theory we applied to our piece was Levi Straus' binary opposites theory because age played a big part in the narrative.
